SHAW AND BAILLY ADD TO INJURY LIST
With Manchester United already hampered by injuries, Jose Mourinho will be hoping defenders Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly are not long-term absentees after the pair were forced off in the 1-1 home draw with Swansea City on Sunday.
The Reds were playing their fourth game in 10 days and were already without Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Tim Fosu-Mensah. Marouane Fellaini is suspended after his red card in the Manchester derby.
Left-back Shaw, who was making his third Premier League start of the year, was withdrawn after only nine minutes and Mourinho admitted it could be a “big injury”.
"I don’t know at all," he told MUTV. "Luke has to be a big injury, when you’re out after 10 minutes, it has to be a big injury. Eric, maybe he is injured but, at the same time, maybe it’s in relation to him being the guy who’s played 800 minutes of football in April. Maybe he has also a relation to that.”
With the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Spanish side Celta Vigo next up on Thursday, the injury to Bailly could not be more unfortunate with no senior centre-backs currently fit.
With Mourinho unsure as to the extent of Bailly’s problem, as the Ivory Coast international limped off in the 61st minute after a tangle with Fernando Llorente, Matteo Darmian may be asked to perform in the middle again after coming off the bench.
