Wayne Rooney made the perfect start to his Everton return, scoring the decisive goal against Stoke City with his 199th Premier League strike.

A new-look Toffees side endured a frustrating first half which featured just two shots on target.
But Rooney headed home moments before the interval following a cross from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The 31-year-old has now netted eight goals in his side’s first match of the season – the joint best PL record along with Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer.

With another summer signing, Jordan Pickford, denying Xherdan Shaqiri a late equaliser, Rooney’s winner gave Everton their first opening-day victory for five years.

Stoke have still only managed to win one of their opening fixtures, against Burnley back in 2009.
